One Day at a Time

I just watched the Super Bowl last night and the Philadelphia Eagles beat the Kansas City Chiefs. I enjoyed the game until the score got so uneven and became boring. The halftime show by Kendrick Lamar was something I really enjoyed. The symbolism was powerful with the game controller, the American Flag and Uncle Sam. The messaging was striking and bold especially in front of the current President of the United States.

I was lucky enough to attend a Super Bowl party. There was food and friends. Everyone had a good time. However, when Kendrick Lamar started performing, the crowd or well one person, in particular, started murmuring. Some quotes include, "There is not a single white person up there!" "Can you understand what he is saying?!" "Do you know his songs?!" "I can't understand him!" "You all like this kind of stuff?" and I also saw some people post on Facebook, "let's get back to real entertainment at the half!" and "This is how my generation did halftime shows (referencing to Prince). Just sayin." There are many people who do not take the times to educate themselves and IT SHOWS. Kendrick Lamar and his performance was beautiful and poetic. It was art! It was not about white people! It was a story about Black people trying to navigate through the struggles of life in America. He did all this in front of Donald Trump. It takes a brave person to perform such a thought-provoking and evocative show. I am hoping the president, and his people were smart enough to understand the messaging. Probably not.

I cannot help but focus on the game controller layout of the Super Bowl halftime show and its relation to Women's reproductive health and rights. I interpret this layout as Americans being controlled by the federal government. Which is the dangerous path we are headed down. However, women's reproductive health and rights have been controlled by the government for years and most recently right now. We are moving backwards and are not progressing but regressing. We already have high maternal mortality rates with significant racial disparities in this country, how will this be impacted when we have a president who is fundamentally against DEI and abortion? The president wanted to remove "end racism" off of the endzones at the Super Bowl and unfortunately the NFL complied. Who does this? Luckily, "choose love" was added in place but why is this necessary?  Now I need the time to process this information.

On to the next post,

Molly
