Parenting

    I went to my little cousin's 2nd birthday on Sunday, and I had a wonderful time playing with all the little kids. I have six little cousins ranging from 6 to 2 years old and I love to make them laugh and smile. My 2-year cousin has two older brothers, and I witnessed both of them get spanked at the party. Now spanking is probably something we all went through growing up. But these boys were spanked in front of a room full of people and quite forcefully. They got spanked by their dad for throwing a sticky ball on the ceiling, which is something we were all guilty of doing. 

    Now I am discussing this because parenting is difficult. However, I think there is a time and place for spanking and the circumstances in which these little boys got spanked, in my opinion, did not warrant it. After they were spanked the whole mood of the party soured because there were over 10 little kids there and they were all having fun but then, abruptly, they were not having fun. 

    I believe this whole situation could have called for a de-escalation of behavior. Pull the boys aside and tell them their behavior is wrong, do not just spank them causing them to cry and become scared. I understand frustration but there are better, more effective routes to discipline than spanking. 

    Before you start having kids, think of what parent you want to be, because I know for a fact the little boy's mom does not like that her sons are spanked for minor offenses.

    Throughout pregnancy, delivery and recovery, the number one priority is not "what kind of parent am I going to be?" and that is completely understandable, but I believe it is important to broach these conversations before and after pregnancy.

    Women deal with enough pregnancy complications as it is, why should parenting be another complication? It takes communication and effort but without either of those, difficulties can arise.

    Parenting is another aspect to maternal and child health because it can increase a child's well-being and create a support system.

The First Day Thoughts

1/8/25  The First Day Thoughts      My first day of class I feel energized. This class makes me feel excited. I want to travel to Gambia and create meals. I want to be creative and have fun.       My base knowledge on maternal and child health is limited but I have always had this sense of female empowerment. I went to an all-girls high school in Louisville where girl power and leadership was the backbone of my education. Resist

 1/27/25    Resist      Right now, I am feeling stressed. Maternal health and women's reproductive health is becoming under government control. Men are making reproductive rights rules and regulations without a single woman in the room. DEI is going away. Men are coming to the forefront in every aspect of society (government, workforce, etc.). Billionaires, fetuses, and white men are more important than anything else in this world.       I have grown up in a feminist driven household. My mom runs the roost. She told me at age 3, that she was the president of the US, and I believed her. Woman and female power are under siege.  We must resist for the next 4 years.  Resistance is key.
